Wartime Vegetable Show 1917
With the onset of war, several of the clubs and societies had been suspended ‘for the duration of hostilities’, often because the number of men had dwindled, or because activities were deemed ‘inappropriate.’ But the Gardening Society battled on and became quite pivotal with the increased demand on produce from the land. They had stopped their summer meetings to gain advantage of the extra hours for growing and working in their own gardens.
They had also stopped their annual shows, but in May 1917 it was decided to re-instate this event to give purpose to the members horticultural activities and to encourage morale. A meeting was held at the Kings Arms Hotel presided over by Mr W. Rowe. It was voted to hold an autumn vegetable show in the coming September. It was proposed to have three classes, as amateurs, professionals and cottagers.
