For many years a tenant farmer on Squerryes land, Jack Steven ran the largest dairy farm in the district. Curiously, the Steven men and the Greenlees, both longstanding farming families in the area were related and both had their roots on Scottish soil.
In 1951 Force Green Farm was the province of Jack Steven, Squerryes Home Farm was run by Harry Steven, Thomas Greenlees ran Gaysham Farm on the east-side of Croydon Road near the Pilgrims Way and Charmans Farm was the province of widow Mrs John Greenlees.
Of the other farms in the district at that time, Fred Baker was running Greencroft Farm on the west-side of Croydon Road just beyond the gasworks and Robert Palmer was the farmer at Park Farm on the Brasted Road, previously the tenancy of the Durtnell family. Captain Arthur Granville Soames ran Chartwell Farm, The Earl of Cromer retained French Street Farm and Moorhouse Farm was the province of Edward Boyes.
