Electricity Generating Hall at Sundridge
Advancing Technology
The advent of the new century brought a steady march in advances in technology. The generation of electricity was by then understood and the Sevenoaks Electricity Supply Company had successfully built its shareholding and opened their ‘Electricity Works’ at Sundridge in 1915. Men were employed and trained as cable jointers and the first main power cables began to be laid that year. The generating hall at the works eventually housed two 150 horsepower Mirlees diesel engines driving 50 kVA Crompton A.C. generators and two 300 horsepower Mirlees engines driving 150 kVA Crompton A.C. generators, all delivering the agreed 220 volts alternating current output. In this photograph, the smaller generators are in the foreground with the larger 300 h.p. units beyond.
