Electric Companies in Kent
The Sevenoaks and District Electricity Company were one of many independent supply companies operating in Kent around that time. The Sevenoaks Company covered quite a large area including Otford, Sundridge, Brasted, Westerham, Limpsfield, Tatsfield, Bessel’s Green, Chipstead, Bradbourne, and other outlying villages to the north and east of Sevenoaks town, together with Oxted, Titsey, and Limpsfield in Surrey. Villages along the North Downs and upper Darenth Valley were covered by the nearest supply competitors based in Bromley and Dartford, later to be absorbed with Sevenoaks and many others in the formation of the South Eastern Electricity Generating Board following the ‘Electricity Act’ of 1947. The SEEGB would later become Seeboard.
The introduction of electric power was initially for street lighting, but people soon observed how much more efficient this was than gas lighting and the demand quickly grew to install lighting circuits in domestic homes.
