Westerham Town Band post WWI

Both father and son, Albert Edward Newton and Edward Albert Newton served in Royal West Kent regiments during WWI. Albert served in France, but was discharged through sickness half-way through 1915. His son Edward served in India where he received the India General Service Medal and bar on the Afghanistan north west frontier. This identifies him in this 1919 picture of the Town Band, where he sits immediately to the left of the big drum, proudly wearing his service medal and bar.  At this stage Edward had taken the position of bandmaster, relinquished by his father as the band regrouped after the war.

Father Albert Newton can be seen 2nd from the left in the same row, holding a marching euphonium between his knees.
