History of Westerham's Garages

1917 Ads HJ HubbleBrasted

There were four garages in Westerham by 1925 – Wolfe Garage on The Green  run by Ernest Blackton, London Road Garage run by Bertie Bayliss and Robert Stone, The Westerham Motor Garage run by Henry H. Ryall in the High Street and “West Kent” Works at the bottom of Hosey Hill, which had begun life in 1902  as “West Kent” Cycle Works owned by Edward Evenden.

Wolfe Garage had been started by Henry Hubble in 1906. Originally a photographer in Brasted, Hubble had witnessed the advent of the ‘safety cycle’ in the early 1900s and decided this was worthy of a business venture. His adverts at the time reveal that he would deal in anything, advertising  building materials alongside Gent’s bicycles!
