Sports and Recreation

Most Westerham men 'cut their sporting teeth' as boys at Hosey School where cricket and football were both enthusiastically played. Between the mid-1920s to the mid-1940s Westerham had three 'professional' football teams, being Westerham Town, Westerham Wednesday and the Black Eagle Football Club. Some of the leading players like Bill 'Beazle' Richardson and Bernard Chilman would play for the Town team and the Black Eagle team. The Wednesday team was composed of the town's traders who had to work on Saturdays, but got Wednesday afternoon off with half-day closing.
