Westerham Town Band to play to raise funds 1911
King Edward VII had died of a heart attack on May 6th 1910. In Sevenoaks the decision was made to “…erect a Hospital worthy of the late King’s memory” capitalised by grants, fund-raising events and public subscription, and to that effect on April 15th 1911, the Westerham Town Band were approached to deliver an open-air concert (weather permitting) in the Town opposite the London County and Westminster Bank. This would begin and end with marches into and from Market Square and would include a Cornet Solo, a Waltz, an Overture and Operatic selections. They were clearly quite a talented bunch!
