Charlie Sharp’s garage (where Squerrys Mead is today) was the other major site of ‘war work’ in Westerham apart from the Sterling Works at the bottom of Hosey Hill. With RAF Biggin Hill so close and the constant bombing of the south east corner of England, it beggars belief that two munitions establishments would be based in Westerham during the war years…
Peter Myhill remembers his fathers involvement “…Dad ran the machine shop at Charlie Sharp’s with John Igglesden and they had mainly girl machinists on shift work, I think they did twelve hours on and twelve hours off. He was on-call to go out to any of the farms and repair any tractors that had broken down, and he was a part-time fireman with the auxiliaries before the war and National Fire Service during the war years until he was discharged in 1948…”
