Post Office staff outside number 9 The Green
Harriet and Thomas Newton pose outside number 9 The Green which was the Post and Telegraph Office until 1912, when a dedicated building was erected in what became ‘Post Office yard’ in London Rd (as of 2018 this building now houses Moorenergy fitness centre). The Newtons are seen with their postmen and telegram boys outside the Telegraph office. This building became a sweet shop run by the Cosgroves in the 1950s and was then converted to a private house latterly the home of Jill Tookey who founded the National Youth Ballet.
Collectively, the Newton’s must have been a fairly wealthy family, as they owned number 9 The Green and many of the other houses in that row outright, as is recorded in the ledger of ‘Special Expenses’ and rates in 1913.
