Notice of Public Meeting to decide on site for Wolfe's Statue November 1910
It had been proposed that the Wolfe memorial statue be erected at the top of the Green where the fountain stood. The Parish Council had called a public meeting at the Town Hall in November 1910 to make the decision, as not everyone was happy that the fountain would be moved. The meeting was chaired by Charles Shawyer and to the Council’s relief the decision was carried by a majority vote. It was then proposed that the fountain be moved to where it stands today in Market Square. It is interesting to note that at that time, The Green was still being called Market Square, as that was where the annual cattle market had always been held.
