Allotments under threat.
Following the second World War local planning was well under way for the development of much needed social housing to expand on that first built on Nursery Site in 1927 and at the Paddock. Some allotment sites were put under threat by these development plans and to that end Westerham Allotment Holders Association Ltd in 1948 commissioned an independent survey from Mr E. C. Francis Esq A.R.I.C.S. A.A.I. A.M.T.P.I. to establish the validity, usefulness, utilisation and ultimate protection of established and worked sites.
Mr. Francis goes on to describe the increasing allotment community: ‘…the Westerham Allotment Holders Association Ltd., is assuming more and more importance, having doubled its membership in the last year, principally by taking members from Currant Hill and other Council Allotments. The Association first took over the Farley allotments in 1930 from the Parish Council. Each member of the Association has taken up a £1 share of which only one shilling is paid up, and the rules empower the Association to create allotment areas, improve existing areas and even to erect houses for the members!
