Westerham Parish Council – Steward of the Manor and The Green
A meeting of Westerham Parish Council was held on Monday evening with Mr. C. H. Shawyer presiding. There were also present Mrs. Mackinnon, Miss Bartlett, Messrs. R. E. Bushell, A. A. Deadman, S. W. Hammond and J. Hunt
CONDITION OF THE GREEN
At the last meeting attention was drawn by the vicar to the condition of the Green, and the Council adopted the following resolution: ‘We, the Westerham Parish Council, as representing the parishioners of Westerham, desire to draw your attention to the neglected state of the Green, and to point out to you that we consider there is some duty to the town on the part of those who hold manorial rights over the Green in maintaining it and saving it from becoming an eyesore and a disgrace’. This resolution was forwarded to the Steward of the Manor.
The following reply was now received from Captain Harold Streatfeild, Steward of the Manor:-
‘I have your letter of the 6th inst. enclosing copy of a resolution passed by your Council on the 5th inst. I shall be glad if you will convey to your Council that, in my opinion, the resolution as to the subject matter of the complaint is discourteous to the verge of impertinence, and that under the circumstances I propose to do nothing in the matter whatsoever. I will communicate with Mr. Warde and I have no doubt whatever that he will take the same view. May I point out that on several occasions for some time past when the Lord of the Manor has attempted to improve the Green, on each occasion he has desisted owing to the outcry raised. Also I note that no specific points requiring attention are raised in the resolution in question, nor, consequently, remedies suggested. Finally, I would suggest to the Westerham Parish Council that the Lord of the Manor, with the aid of his Steward, is perfectly competent to judge of his duties to the town, without the Council’s aid.’
