Gospel Hall Advert
This advert from the Westerham Herald of 1926 dates from almost the last days of the Gospel Chapel beside the laundry in the High Street, which first opened its doors around 1880. Non-conformist religion was an accepted form of worship at that time, usually adopted by ‘The Brethren’. Note the use of the letters ‘D.V.’ in the welcome – ‘Bright Gospel Services are (D.V.) held every Sunday evening…’ This stands for the latin ‘Deo Volente’ meaning ‘God Willing’.
Amongst those who would take the services were two local ‘creative’ tradesmen – the photographer and artist Frederick Benson, and local tobacconist and musician Walter Bennett who went on to become the bandmaster of the town’s band in the mid 1930s.
