Elm View Mill, Mill lane
This photograph taken in the mid 1950s shows Elm View Mill in a bad state of repair. The notice above the door states ‘The public are warned not to approach this mill as the structure is in a highly dangerous condition’. Most of the joists of the upper floor and the roof timbers had rotted away and were in a state of partial collapse.
Elm View Mill, due to its very public location has always been well known to both residents and visitors to the town and as a result there is no shortage of paintings, etchings and photographs of this fine old building. However, in spite of much local upset, the mill was demolished in the 1960’s, and now, apart from the millpond and some rubble, nothing remains on the site where the fine old stone mill once stood.
