Chapel at the foot of Hosey Hill
Nothing is known about this chapel, other than it is believed to have stood on the corner of Hosey Hill and today’s A25 heading east, the site where ‘West Lodge’ was built in 1862. The photograph is therefore amongst Westerham’s oldest, probably dating from the mid-to-late 1850s. It would likely be attributable to Joseph Henry Jewell or Arthur Thomas Dean, both working as photographers in the local area at that time.
Peter and Maisie Finch bought West Lodge in the early 1960s and when Peter was digging the footings for a single story extension he added to the lodge, he came across substantial foundations remaining from the chapel site.
