Peter Finch “My dad wasn’t a rich man but he looked after his pennies. He worked for the two Doctors, Hay and Cotton. He split his week between them, as a gardener for Dr Hay and a groom for Dr Cotton. He only got labourer’s wages, about two pounds a week, but he’d put something away each pay-day and he saved-up and bought a little Austin 7 and we used to tootle around in that.
He didn’t have to have a car because Doctor Cotton had a bull-nose Morris with a top that folded down and my dad was his driver and had the use of the car whenever he liked as Doctor Cotton didn’t drive. Every Sunday in the summer we used to go to the coast, mum would pack a picnic and off we’d go – I could take a mate with me and we’d jump in the car and head for Hastings or somewhere else that was handy. We’d sit on the beach and swim in the sea – they were really happy days and I had a good upbringing. Coming along that bit later when my brother and sister had grown up, mum and dad fussed over me and treated me like an only child…
