Churchill Secondary School
The School was first opened as ‘Westerham County Secondary School’ in September nineteen forty-nine. On July 5 1950 the School’s new Flag, based on the Warde family Coat of Arms was flown for the first time in public, and the first Westerham Secondary School Sports Day was held at King George’s Field. July 26 of the same year saw the first ‘Open Day’ at the School attracting hundreds of visitors who were greatly impressed with the work being done. Built to take five-hundred pupils, the catchment was staged such that local families had preference to initial places, followed by the brothers and sisters of existing pupils. Those living beyond three miles distance were asked to pay an amount towards transport costs by local coaches.
The co-educational School was moved into new buildings on the site ten years later. At that point it was renamed ‘Churchill School’ with Sir Winston’s blessing. The School was further enlarged in 1968 and retained twenty acres of playing fields.
