Old House Inn 1895 photographed by J.H. Jewell
Known in the 1890s as the ‘Old House Inn’, this photograph shows the pub completely devoid of advertising apart from a name on the lamp above the door. It was unusual at that time for the Brewery not to promote themselves with large hoardings on the roof or adorning the front of the building. Originally tied to Watkins’ Swan Brewery at the bottom of Hosey Hill, this establishment became a purveyor of ‘Westerham Ales,’ from Ben Bushell’s Black Eagle Brewery following takeover of the Swan Brewery in the late 1890s.
